The map and Remote Sensing Imagery Digital Archive Project

Project Leader:I-chun Fan

Executing organization: Research Center for Humanities and Social Science, Academia Sinica

Archives Description:

Atlas and imagery of remote sensing describes the landscape caused by either natural processes or human activities in a period, annotate what happened in the specific space-time condition, and reflect the culture in a place. To review those maps in the same place with different periods will assist us in understanding the change of environment, society, and culture. In another viewpoint, to review those maps in different places with the same period will know the change of environmental characteristics in different places. If we could integrate and analyze the stuff effectively, that will not only become the powerful and objective evidences to help us reconstructing the past but also can build the 3-Dimensional Information Model to spread, record, and deduce the evolution of human-land relationship. On the basis of the integrated space-time framework, we can rehabilitate the history, simulate the change of evolution and forecast the trend in the future. In advanced stage, it can overlay with various subject themes to generalize complex information in the maps and also provide integrated multi-informations and related analysis more efficiently. We suggest this approach because it can arise the abilities of analysis and recognition.

Collecting a lot of atlas and imagery of remote sensing widely is the other important goal of the project and digitalizing those stuff in order to manage, conserve, and use. In addition, to harmony with the other related projects of technical support closely will keep us more easy to construct the distributed spatiotemporal platform which provides the applicable information to do what we want to do. For the connotation of data sets, the important products of the project classified by Geospatial information are introduced as follows: l. Digital Raster Graphic, DRG : Each map scanned in TIFF format with 300 dpi, stored with the compressed tech. (ex: MrSID), and dealt with been rectified in georeference conforms with fairly good precision and superior quality. 2. Digital Line Graphs, DLG : Use the topological structure(ex. point, line, polygon ) to display the topographic maps converted from digital raster maps and to store in Arc/Info Shapefile and SDTS(Spatial Data Transformation Standard) format. Taking account of dealing time and cost, the project only preferentially deals with the important layers in Taiwan Historic Map Sets, not overall. 3. Digital Elevation Model, DEM:is digital cartographic/geographic data in raster form. The terrain elevations for ground positions are sampled at regularly spaced horizontal intervals. It can be used alone or combined with other data sets to apply. The part of those data with similar deal of DLG will be dealt with demands. 4. Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle, DOQ: The imagery of aircraft orthorectified and rectified by georeference conforms with the geometry characteristic of maps (ex: orientation, position and distance).
